    Presentation:

    This course examines competitive intelligence models, functions, & practices; the roles of information professionals in CI, and the management of CI. 

    Discussion and practice topics include: intelligence ethical & legal considerations; identifying intelligence needs; research methods, analysis, production, and dissemination; the uses of intelligence; intelligence sources and tools; managing the intelligence function; and the evolution of CI. 

    A working knowledge of print and electronic business information sources is recommended. 

    In the course outline, learning is achieved through the iteration between reading the documentation provided and performing the tasks of the practical exercises, including case studies, which is nothing other than the application of the old method of "learning by doing" and, beyond, to be teaching with the best method of learning: the simulation of professional practice. 

    In this scheme Professor’s role is fundamentally guiding, being the student the one who must discover problems to solve and solutions, while the teacher makes partner when it is required to do so. This course (12 weeks) is broken up into diverse 12 topical segments of one week each. 

    Learning Outcomes:

    At the end of this course, students should be able to:

    • Become conversant in competitive intelligence, strategic, and corporate/organization terms and concepts.

    • Develop more in-depth knowledge of and anticipate issues impacting organizational effectiveness and competitiveness.

    • Internalize a complete understanding of the issues surrounding competitive intelligence ethics.

    • Learn how to protect an organizations’ competitive and knowledge assets from internal and external threats.

    • Develop an awareness of issues and trends in the field of competitive intelligence, including research, analysis, and process management.

    • Know how to take advantage of opportunities for information professionals in the field of competitive intelligence.

    • Know the range of competitive intelligence tools & services; as well as how to evaluate, select, and use them effectively.

    • Manage key issues and challenges regarding KM for CI and support an organization in resolving them.

    • Identify and apply professional tools, news, and resources to gain awareness and build upon skills.

    • Elevate problem solving through targeted analysis.

    Course contents:

    The course consists of two Modules and the following 12 topics:

    Module I
    1. CI Introduction: CI history, purpose, & value.
    2. Ethical & legal considerations.
    3. Knowledge Management and Competitive Intelligence.
    4. The Intelligence Process: purpose, functions, applications.
    5. Understanding & defining intelligence needs.
    6. Developing an implementation plan.

    Module II
    7. Roles of information & intelligence professionals: organizing the CI team.
    8. Gathering internal information.
    9. Gathering external information.
    10. Analyzing the competition.
    11. Analytical Models. Some Advanced Techniques.
    12. Turning data into intelligence and Intelligence into Action.

    Academic Calendar:
    Quarterly course that is taught from March to June (during the Segundo Cuatrimestre).

    This course is worth 3 credits.

    Ingeniero Industrial. Doctor en Ciencias Técnicas. Más de 30 años de experiencia como investigador y consultor de empresas. Miembro del Grupo de Investigación “Innovación, Propiedad Industrial y Política Tecnológica” de la ETSII-UPM. Más de 70 publicaciones en revistas nacionales e internacionales. Premiado con múltiples distinciones por los resultados de su actividad en el campo educativo.

    Course Methodology:

    La metodología Didáctica de CEPADE, es Propia y Única. PPG: Práctica, Participativa, y Global.

    Práctica: Se basa en el método del caso.
    Participativa: El conocimiento de cada uno de los alumnos se contrasta con los de resto de participantes haciendo el aprendizaje colaborativo a través del Campus Virtual.
    Global: Ese aprendizaje Participativo, no sólo se comparte y adquiere con alumnos de España sino también con alumnos de hasta 40 países (aproximadamente el 40% de los alumnos son internacionales).

    En el Campus virtual de CEPADE un Profesor-Tutor, mantiene la documentación actualizada, resuelve las dudas, guía el aprendizaje y realiza la evaluación.

    Both the whole course documentation and the monitoring of the tutorials along with the final exam will be conducted in English. The level required is Advanced.

    This web-based course will be implemented entirely via the Internet with a flexible, asynchronous schedule.

    There will be weekly discussions and 3 written assignments. This course is designed to optimize discussion and community so that everyone can bootstrap on each other's knowledge, learning, and analytical abilities.

    This course will centre upon regular readings and discussions of the readings, as well as discussions of assigned examples of CI.

    Discussions of readings are staggered so that they occur during the week following the week the readings are assigned. This will give everyone a full week to engage with the readings and prepare to discuss them.

    ASSESSMENT:

    Revision exercises: The revision exercises are designed to allow students to self-assess their own learning progress at the beginning of each unit.

    Control Tests: A control test is designed to grade students in the middle of their learning process and can act as a guide for the final exam.

    Practice tests

    Non-distant final exam: The final paper lasts for one hour at the end of the term. Students are allowed to use study materials during this exam. There are two possible exams per course: in June and September and students can freely choose to take any of them. A grade of Pass is required to obtain the corresponding credits of each course.
