    Presentation:

    Objectives of this course are: (1) to introduce students to the world of finance, especially to the financial operations of business(es), (2) to familiarize students with the fundamental concepts and approaches used in corporate finance, (3) to equip students with the “analytical thinking methods” and “decision making rules” used in the area of financial management.

    Corporate finance is not just about valuation or risk management, it involves much more than that. It covers many other areas that are key in the pursuit of the ultimate goal of maximizing shareholder value. And the student will have the opportunity of being exposed to all these topics and working in detail with them.

    Learning Outcomes:

    Upon completion of this course the student should have a thorough working knowledge of theories, methods and procedures used in the financial management of a firm, segmented into the three key areas.

    - Capital Budgeting: dealing with the long-term investment side of the balance sheet.
    - Capital Structure: dealing with all aspects relating to the appropriate mix of debt and equity
    - Working Capital Management: dealing with the issues affecting the operating short term flows.

    In addition, the student will also have exposure to areas that appear very frequently nowadays in the financial press: Mergers and Acquisitions, Financial Distress and restructurings, and basic introduction to the International side of Corporate Finance.

    Annual course that is taught from October to February (during the Primer and the Segundo Cuatrimestre).

    MANUEL F. GOUDIE PUJALS
    PROFESOR
    Holds a Bachelor´s degree in Business Administration from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and an MBA from the University of Miami, Florida (USA). Professional experience of more than 30 years, primarily in international banking (Citibank), in Spain, Portugal, and in the United Kingdom, but also in corporate finance,non-profit organizations and consulting. Over the years, Manuel has also taught finance and accounting at various universities and business schools and, while at Citi, was actively involved in internal training. He is the Director of the Master´s in International Finance program and Finance professor at the IEB (Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles- Madrid) and Management Accounting professor at the Universidad Carlos III (Madrid) and Business and Finance professor at the College for International Studies (The American University in Madrid).

    Course Methodology:

    La metodología Didáctica de CEPADE, es Propia y Única. PPG: Práctica, Participativa, y Global.

    Práctica: Se basa en el método del caso.
    Participativa: El conocimiento de cada uno de los alumnos se contrasta con los de resto de participantes haciendo el aprendizaje colaborativo a través del Campus Virtual.
    Global: Ese aprendizaje Participativo, no sólo se comparte y adquiere con alumnos de España sino también con alumnos de hasta 40 países (aproximadamente el 40% de los alumnos son internacionales).

    En el Campus virtual de CEPADE un Profesor-Tutor, mantiene la documentación actualizada, resuelve las dudas, guía el aprendizaje y realiza la evaluación.

    Both the whole course documentation and the monitoring of the tutorials along with the final exam will be conducted in English. The level required is Advanced.

    • Individual Study: Students are expected to read the assigned chapters of the textbook for each unit and become familiar with the key concepts covered.
    • Self –Assessment Test: At the end of each unit, there will be a Self Assessment text comprising between 10 and 20 questions on the material covered. Students are encouraged to complete these test as an indicator of their progress.
    • End of Unit Problems: At the end of each unit, students will have to complete the proposed end of unit problems and submit them within a specified time frame. Feedback on the individual results will be provided to the students.
    • On-line Case Discussion: There will be two on-line cases in each module which are expected to be discussed and debating by the students during a ½ week period.
    • Questions/Doubts: Students are encouraged to raise any questions or doubts on the material covered which the professor will address globally for the benefit of the class.
    The Self-Assessment Tests and the End-of-Unit Problems will be completed in the McGraw-Hill Connect® platform

    ASSESSMENT:

    Revision exercises: The revision exercises are designed to allow students to self-assess their own learning progress at the beginning of each unit.

    Control Tests: A control test is designed to grade students in the middle of their learning process and can act as a guide for the final exam.

    Practice tests.

    Non-distant final exam. The final paper lasts for one hour at the end of the term. Students are allowed to use study materials during this exam. There are two possible exams per course. A grade of Pass is required to obtain the corresponding credits of each course.
